Hubworld Prepares

Alum Chine 20th to 21st June

ALUM CHINE TO BE COLONISED BY HUBWORLD! Ros Fry from Lighthouse, introduces us to the start of Hubworld as preparations begin on the beach at Alum Chine for this spectacular event. Run time: 02’06 mins 5.5MB Thousands of children and young people from Bournemouth and Poole are planning to celebrate midsummer with the creation of spectacular two-day arts festival at Alum Chine in Bournemouth entitled Hubworld. Hubworld will take place in the exotic wooded valley and sandy, blue-flag beach of this popular holiday spot from Friday 20 to Saturday 21 June 2008 to mark the completion of a three -year, government funded culture and education initiative called Cultural Hub. Involving key cultural providers in the area, eighteen local schools, over ten professional artists and performers and led by producer Antony Waller, the free festival will present a vast array of artistic activities including a procession, art installations, award ceremonies, competitions and performances. The Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra’s resident composer, Stephen McNeff is creating a special Hubworld theme for participants to perform. Hubworld is the culmination of a massive, half million pound initiative which has brought together Lighthouse, The Study Gallery, the libraries and museums, the BSO, the Archive service and the arts development units alongside selected arts specialist schools. It’s aim is to improve the cultural opportunities for young people. Bournemouth and Poole are one of three cultural hubs in the UK. The other two are Durham and Telford. Dozens of projects and schemes have been taken place in the area, all initiated by children and schools with support from cultural organisations and managed by wave, Bournemouth and Poole’s innovative arts and education agency. Antony Waller is a maverick arts entrepreneur famous for creating large scale, ambitious public arts events. His 2005 Road to the Beach event in Cornwall attracted world-wide interest. He comments, “Hubworld is all about where we live and where we come from. Alum Chine and the beach seem to hold such a special significance for so many people that it was chosen as the site for this celebration. Children from all around the area are buzzing with ideas, working with their teachers and artists to imagine their own “Sandworlds” that they will create on the beach. They are going to turn these ideas into extraordinary events and performances that the public will be able to see and join in with. We don’t want to give away all their secrets, but it’s going to be very special indeed”
